Penfield & Smith provided services to the County of Santa Barbara Flood Control District for establishment of a control network and Digital Topographic Base Mapping of a one hundred (100) square mile area. The area encompasses the City of Santa Maria and the surrounding agricultural areas in the Santa Maria River Floodplain. Based on Penfield & Smith recommendations, the Santa Barbara County Surveyor authorized the establishment of fifty (50) permanent control points for future use in the regional Geographic Information System. These, along with 140 additional aerial photo panel points, provide control for the topographic mapping. All project control was established utilizing GPS and was complemented by geodetic precise leveling. All mapping was produced in digital AutoCad format.
